How Does Sublimation Printing Work for Sportswear?

How sublimated jerseys, shorts and rash guards are made, which fabrics work, and when sublimation is the right choice for your design.

Quick answer

The design is printed onto transfer paper, then heat and pressure turn the ink into a gas that bonds into polyester fibres. The colour becomes part of the fabric, so it does not crack, peel or add weight. It works on polyester and high-polyester blends, which is why it is the standard for team jerseys and performance wear.

From design to finished jersey

  1. Artwork. Your design is laid out on each pattern piece: front, back, sleeves and collar.
  2. Printing. The panels are printed in mirror image onto sublimation paper.
  3. Heat transfer. Paper and fabric pass through a heat press or calender, and the ink transfers into the polyester.
  4. Cutting. The printed fabric is cut along the pattern lines.
  5. Sewing. Panels are sewn into the finished garment, with labels and trims added.

Because the fabric is printed before it is sewn, the design can run edge to edge and across seams, with no limit on the number of colours.

Fabrics that work

  • Polyester performance knits and mesh for jerseys and training tops
  • Polyester-spandex for rash guards, compression wear and leggings
  • Polyester microfibre for shorts

Cotton does not hold sublimation ink. For cotton tees and hoodies, use screen print, DTF or embroidery instead. Compare methods in embroidery vs screen printing vs sublimation.

When sublimation is the right choice

  • Full-colour designs, gradients and patterns that cover the whole garment
  • Team kits where every player has a different name and number
  • Performance wear that must stay light and breathable
  • Designs that must survive many washes without fading or cracking

Combining sublimation with other methods

Many kits mix methods: a sublimated jersey with an embroidered crest, or a sublimated rash guard with a heat-transfer sponsor logo. Each extra method adds a production step, so it is worth deciding early.

Frequently asked questions

Does sublimation fade?

The ink bonds into the polyester fibres, so it holds its colour through repeated washing and does not crack or peel.

Can I sublimate on cotton hoodies?

No. Sublimation needs polyester or a high-polyester blend. Use screen print, DTF or embroidery on cotton.

Is there a colour limit?

No. Sublimation prints full colour in one process, so gradients, patterns and photos are possible without extra screens.

What is the minimum order for sublimated kits?

30 pieces per design. Names, numbers and sizes can vary within the order.
