Fabric Guide for Martial Arts Uniforms
Typical fabric choices by discipline. Competition rules differ between federations such as the IBJJF, WKF, World Taekwondo and IJF, so tell us where your students compete and we will match the spec.
| Uniform | Typical fabric | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BJJ gi | Cotton pearl or gold weave jacket, ripstop or twill pants | Pre-shrunk options to limit shrinkage |
| Karate gi | Cotton or poly-cotton canvas, light to heavy weight | Lighter for kumite, heavier for kata |
| Taekwondo dobok | Poly-cotton or polyester ribbed fabric | V-neck jacket, colour collar for black belts |
| Judo gi | Heavy cotton double or single weave | Reinforced collar and stitching |
| Rash guard & shorts | Polyester-spandex stretch fabric | Sublimated, flatlock seams |
Getting a Uniform Right on the Mats
A uniform that shrinks two sizes, or a patch that breaks competition rules, costs an academy more than the order itself. These are the details we settle before production starts.
Weave and Weight
Pearl weave is lighter and cooler for daily training. Gold and double weaves are heavier and harder to grip. Tell us how your students train and we will suggest the weave.
Shrinkage
Cotton gis shrink after the first hot wash. Pre-shrunk fabric keeps sleeves and pants at the length you approved on the sample.
Patch Placement
Federations allow patches only in set areas of the jacket and pants. Tell us where your students compete and we place logos where they are allowed.
Ranked Rash Guards
No-gi events often ask for rash guards that show belt rank. Sublimation lets each rank colour carry the same academy design.
Fight Shorts
Side splits, stretch panels and a secure waistband let fighters kick and scramble. Sublimated designs keep their colour through repeated washing.
Sizing Kids and Adults
Kids’ and adults’ sizes can sit in one 30-piece order. Share the size chart your students already use, or use ours, before sampling.
What Changes the Price of a Martial Arts Uniform
Two gis that look the same in a photo can be priced very differently. These are the factors behind every quote.
| Factor | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Weave and fabric weight | Gold and double weaves use more cotton than pearl weave, and add shipping weight |
| Pre-shrinking | Pre-shrunk fabric needs an extra finishing step before cutting |
| Embroidery | Larger logos and more stitches take more machine time on every piece |
| Patches | Each sewn-on patch is made and stitched separately |
| Sublimation | Full-colour rash guards and shorts are printed in one process, whatever the number of colours |
| Belts | Stripes, names and academy embroidery add steps to each belt |
| Quantity | Larger runs spread sampling and set-up work across more pieces |
| Packing | Starter kits packed per student take more handling than bulk packing |
