Woven vs Printed Clothing Labels: Which Should Your Brand Use?

A practical comparison of the main label types for private label clothing, and where each one works best.

Quick answer

Woven labels are the premium choice for brand labels: textured, durable and hard to copy. Printed labels are smoother and suit care and content details. Tagless heat-transfer labels are printed straight onto the garment and are the most comfortable option for activewear and tees. Many brands combine a woven brand label with a printed or heat-transfer care label.

Woven labels: the brand signature

A woven label is usually the first branded detail a customer touches. Because the design is woven in rather than printed on, it keeps its colour and edges wash after wash, and it feels like a finished retail product. Woven labels work best with bold logos and short text; very fine lettering is better printed.

Printed labels: the details

Printed labels carry small text well, which is why they are often used for care instructions, fibre content and country of origin. They are soft against the skin and practical when a label needs a lot of information – for example several languages for the EU or English and French for Canada.

Tagless heat-transfer labels: comfort first

For leggings, compression wear, rash guards and performance tees, a label at the neck can rub. A heat-transfer print puts the brand mark, size and care details straight onto the garment instead. Check that your fabric suits heat transfer – we will advise when you send the spec.

Do not forget the legal details

Each market has its own labelling rules for fibre content, care and origin. We have summarised them on our country pages for the USA, UK, Europe and Canada. Your brand is responsible for the final wording, so confirm it with your compliance adviser.

Hang tags and packaging complete the look

Labels sit inside the garment; hang tags (tag cards) and packaging are what a customer sees first. At Pexton Apparel we make custom woven labels, custom hang tags and custom branded packaging alongside your order, so every piece arrives ready to sell under your name.

In practice: labels, hang tags and packaging come with every private label streetwear and activewear order. Selling in Germany or the Netherlands? Labels need the local language – see Germany and Netherlands.

Common follow-up questions

Can you make both woven and printed labels for one order?

Yes. A common setup is a woven brand label at the neck plus a printed care and content label in the side seam.

Can you put labels in more than one language?

Yes. Send us the wording for each language and we produce the labels to match.

Do you make hang tags and packaging too?

Yes. We make custom hang tags (tag cards) and custom branded packaging with your order.

Where should the brand label go?

The centre back neck is most common. Hem or sleeve labels suit streetwear and outerwear, and tagless prints suit activewear.
