Starting a sportswear brand in the UK has never been more accessible. You no longer need thousands of pounds of stock to begin: with a low minimum order and duty-paid delivery, you can launch with a small, focused collection and grow from real sales. This guide walks through each step, from idea to the first boxes arriving at your door.
1. Pick a clear niche
The brands that grow fastest start narrow. Examples:
- gym wear for a specific training style, such as lifting or CrossFit
- fightwear for boxing, Muay Thai or BJJ
- running or cycling kit for clubs and events
- teamwear for a sport you know well
Pick something you understand, so you know what your customers want before they tell you.
2. Start with three to five products
A small first range is easier to fund and to market. A common start is a hero product (for example gym shorts or a rash guard), a matching top and one piece of leisurewear such as a hoodie. Read how to choose gym shorts for your brand and how to start a Muay Thai shorts brand.
3. Prepare your designs
You do not need a full tech pack to get a quote. Sketches or reference photos, your logo as a vector file, colours and a size range are enough to start. As you grow, a tech pack makes reorders consistent. See our tech pack guide and tech pack template.
4. Choose fabrics and sizing for UK customers
Ask for fabric types and weights (GSM) and request samples in UK sizing. Most sportswear uses polyester or nylon blended with spandex for stretch and quick drying. See our fabric GSM guide and polyester vs cotton for sportswear.
5. Find a manufacturer and order samples
Look for a factory with a low minimum, in-house decoration and experience in your products. Ask the 15 questions to ask a sportswear manufacturer. Always approve samples before bulk; Pexton Apparel makes them in about 8–10 days.
6. Branding and labels
Your brand lives in the details: woven neck labels, printed care labels, hang tags and branded polybags. Clothing sold in the UK must show its fibre content, and customers expect care instructions too, so plan both into your labels. Read woven vs printed labels and see private label manufacturing.
7. Plan your first order
With a minimum of 30 pieces per design and sizes mixed, a first order of three to five designs is realistic for a new brand. Price your products before you order, so you know the margin works. Read how to price your clothing brand.
8. Shipping and duties to the UK
Since Brexit, imports into the UK can attract customs duty and import VAT, and unexpected fees on arrival can wipe out your margin. Pexton Apparel ships delivered duty paid (DDP) to the UK, so the price you agree already includes duties and there is nothing to pay when the boxes arrive. See clothing manufacturer for UK brands.
9. Launch and reorder
Launch to a small audience first: your gym, club or local community, plus social media. Watch which sizes and colours sell, and reorder the winners. Bulk production takes about 10–12 days after sample approval, plus shipping, so plan reorders before you run out.
