Polyester vs Cotton for Sportswear and Activewear
How the two most common apparel fibres compare – and why most performance wear is polyester while most streetwear is cotton.
Polyester is the standard for sportswear and activewear: it dries quickly, holds its shape, resists wear and is the fabric sublimation needs. Cotton is softer and more breathable for everyday wear, but it absorbs sweat and dries slowly, so it suits streetwear, lifestyle and warm-up pieces more than training. Blends and elastane mixes combine the strengths of both.
Polyester vs cotton at a glance
| Polyester | Cotton | |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture | Absorbs little, dries fast | Absorbs sweat, dries slowly |
| Feel | Smooth, light, technical | Soft, natural, comfortable |
| Shape and durability | Holds shape, resists wear and shrinkage | Can shrink and stretch out over time |
| Printing | Ideal for sublimation | Ideal for screen printing and embroidery |
| Odour | Can hold odour unless treated | Holds less odour |
| Best for | Jerseys, compression, leggings, rash guards | Hoodies, tees, sweatpants, lifestyle wear |
Why performance wear is mostly polyester
During training, a fabric that absorbs sweat gets heavy and clingy. Polyester moves moisture to the surface where it can evaporate, keeps its shape wash after wash and stands up to friction – which is why football and hockey jerseys, cycling kit, rash guards and compression wear are usually polyester or polyester with elastane. It is also the fibre that full sublimation printing is designed for.
Where cotton wins
For streetwear and everyday wear, cotton’s softness and natural feel matter more than drying speed. Heavyweight cotton fleece and French terry give hoodies and sweatpants the premium handfeel customers expect, and cotton takes screen printing and embroidery beautifully. Blends and stretch fabrics
- Cotton/polyester blends (for example 60/40 or 50/50) feel soft but shrink less and dry faster than pure cotton.
- Polyester/elastane or nylon/elastane gives four-way stretch and recovery for leggings, sports bras and compression wear.
- Cotton/elastane adds comfort stretch to lifestyle pieces.
How to choose
- Training, match or competition? Polyester or a polyester/elastane blend.
- All-over team print? Polyester for sublimation.
- Streetwear hoodie or tee? Cotton or a cotton-rich blend.
- Leggings and compression? A stretch blend with elastane.

In practice: activewear and gym brands usually choose polyester or nylon blends – see private label activewear manufacturing and compression wear. For cotton tees and heavyweight streetwear, see our custom t-shirt manufacturer page.
Common follow-up questions
Is polyester breathable?
Modern performance polyesters are knitted to move air and moisture well. Mesh panels add extra ventilation where athletes need it.
Can cotton be sublimated?
No. Sublimation needs polyester. For cotton, use screen printing, DTF or embroidery.
What fabric is best for leggings?
A polyester/elastane or nylon/elastane blend with good recovery and opacity. Always do a squat test on the sample.
