How Long Does Custom Clothing Manufacturing Take?
A clear, stage-by-stage timeline for private label and custom clothing orders – from first message to boxes at your door.
At Pexton Apparel, a sample for a standard custom garment usually takes about 8–10 days. Once you approve the sample, bulk production usually takes about 10–12 days, then shipping time is added on top. Most of the variation comes from how quickly specs are confirmed and how complex the decoration is.
The custom clothing timeline, stage by stage
Every order moves through the same five stages. The factory controls some of them; others depend on how fast decisions are made on your side. Knowing which is which is the easiest way to hit a launch date.
| Stage | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Brief and quote | Within 24 hours, often sooner | You share your design, tech pack or reference photos, quantities and deadline. We reply with pricing, fabric options and a sampling plan. |
| 2. Sampling | About 8–10 days | Pattern drafting, fabric cutting, printing or embroidery and sewing of your sample. |
| 3. Approval | Depends on you | You check fit, fabric, colours and branding. Any changes are made before bulk is cut. |
| 4. Bulk production | About 10–12 days | Cutting, decoration, sewing, finishing, quality checks, labelling and packing. |
| 5. Shipping | Varies by method | Express courier is fastest; standard and sea freight cost less but take longer. We confirm transit time with your quote. |
These are typical times for standard customisation. They are not guarantees, and we always confirm a timeline in writing when we quote.
What makes an order faster
- A complete tech pack. Measurements, fabric, colours, artwork placement and label details in one document remove most back-and-forth. Our free tech pack template covers the essentials.
- Quick sample feedback. The approval stage is the one the factory cannot speed up. Clear, consolidated comments save days.
- Standard decoration. Sublimation, screen printing and standard embroidery move fastest.
- Fabric from available stock. Common weights and colours can be cut straight away.
What adds time
- Complex embellishment such as rhinestones, heavy appliqué or specialist washes.
- Custom-dyed or custom-knitted fabric in a colour or weight that is not in stock.
- Several sample rounds because the fit or spec changed after the first sample.
- Public holidays and peak seasons at the factory, the carrier or customs.
Planning backwards from your launch date
Pick the day the product must be in your hands, then work backwards: shipping time, bulk production, a buffer for one extra sample round, sampling, and the time you need to finalise your spec. For seasonal drops – back-to-school, Black Friday, the football season or the first cold weeks of autumn – start the conversation early so a second sample round does not push you past your selling window.
In practice: clubs should plan backwards from the first game – see the club kit ordering timeline. Shipping time is on top of production; see shipping for the UK, Germany and Australia.
Common follow-up questions
Can you rush a sample?
Tell us your deadline when you request a quote. Where the design and fabric allow it, we plan sampling around your date and tell you honestly if it is not realistic.
Does the timeline change for larger orders?
Larger quantities can take longer in bulk production. We confirm the exact bulk timeline for your quantity in the quote.
When does the bulk timeline start?
Bulk production is scheduled after you approve the final sample and confirm the order details.
How long does shipping take?
It depends on the destination and method. For example, express courier to Canada usually takes about 3–4 days after dispatch. We confirm transit time for your country with the quote.
